ADR regulations

The ADR regulations from the ADR Treaty relate to the transport of dangerous substances. ADR is the abbreviation of “Accord relatif au transport international des marchandises dangereuses par route”. In other words, transport of dangerous substances by road. The ADR includes a list of substances, the ADR hazard classes on which all dangerous substances are listed, which have a substance identification number (UN number).

What are these regulations?

The various regulations that apply to the transport of these dangerous substances include:

  • Before the start of transport: such as packaging, labelling and drawing up documents
  • Before loading the vehicle: such as stowage and combined loading
  • For the vehicle: such as orange signs and personal protective equipment
  • For on the road: such as the use of fire extinguishers and tunnel and route regulations.

To which matters do the regulations apply?

The ADR regulations apply to matters that must be properly arranged prior to transport, such as labelling, packaging, drawing up documents and the method of loading, as well as to matters that are important during transport, such as the vehicle, personal protective equipment and instructions for on the road, such as tunnel and route regulations.

Who do the regulations apply to?

The regulations apply to all carriers of dangerous goods. For example, the carrier is responsible for:

  • checking whether the shipment complies with the ADR;
  • checking whether the correct documents are included;
  • checking whether the vehicle and the method of loading comply with the requirements;
  • transporting, loading, unloading and temporarily offloading dangerous goods.
