ADR hazard classes

The ADR Treaty is a European treaty relating to the international transport of dangerous goods by road.

Nine categories of ADR hazard classes

This treaty makes a classification of nine categories of ADR hazard classes of dangerous substances. Each class combines a group of substances that can pose a similar hazard during transport:

  1. Explosive substances and objects such as fireworks or ammunition;
  2. Compressed, liquefied or dissolved gases such as nitrogen or propane;
  3. Flammable liquids such as white spirit or methylated spirits;
  4. Flammable solids such as metal powders or sulphur;
  5. Oxidising substances/organic peroxides such as artificial fertiliser or hydrogen peroxide;
  6. Toxic substances/infectious substances such as pesticides or micro-organisms;
  7. Corrosive substances such as battery acid or hydrochloric acid;
  8. Radioactive substances such as uranium;
  9. Other (environmentally) hazardous substances such as lithium batteries.

Regulations for the transport of substances in the ADR hazard classes

These dangerous substances must be recorded with the substance identification number, also known as the UN number. In addition, various regulations apply to the transport of these dangerous substances:

  • Before the start of the transport: such as packaging, labelling and drawing up documents
  • Before loading the vehicle: such as stowage and co-loading
  • For the vehicle: such as orange signs and personal protective equipment
  • For on the road: such as the use of fire extinguishers and tunnel and route regulations.
